Wilderness Charter School

| The Wilderness Charter School began the 2009-2010 school year with a backpacking trek through the Marble Mountains . Learning doesn’t always take place in the classroom. For the Wilderness Charter School, it begins with the Marble Mountains . Twenty-two new students ventured out, starting with a three day base camp on August 29, then into the Marble Mountains September 1 through 10 on the Norn Cross Trail. The Norn Cross Trail was new to Kathryn Holden, teacher of the Wilderness Charter School. She and five guides, all past Charter School students, accompanied the group. Accessed through Happy Camp, the group took in all the outdoors had to offer. That included the new vegetation growing over where there had been a forest fire last year. The scenery also offered Bulk Granite, Cuddihly, Onemile and Yuknom Lakes, all complimented by nice weather. The experience allowed the group to bond with one another, but also have time for themselves. Each student had a 24-hour backpacking solo in which they could take time and space for self-reflection. Wilderness Charter School student Alex Quadrini said, “It was all about being true to myself.” Hannah Heart did some writing in her journal during her solo. Heart also reflected on the experience with her Charter peers, saying it was, “The best way to get connected.” The Wilderness Charter School will take two backpacking trips this school year, the next one to be in the spring.
