Saving Mechanics
Ashland High School Senior Jasper Bivens has recently taken it upon himself to help stop one of many course reductions for the 2009-2010 school year due to budget cuts. Mechanics, which will be reduced from two class periods to one, is his target. Bivens has taken Mechanics for two years and says that it has taught him a trade that he can use for the rest of his life. In addition, the class has provided car repair services to students and to the community. According to Bivens, Mechanics has saved him upwards of four thousand dollars on his car. To make his cause known, Bivens has taken around a petition for students of Ashland High to sign if they are interested in taking the class or support having more than one period offered. After a week, Bivens collected over 250 signatures. He is also planning to host a dance outside of school as a fundraiser either at the Applegate Lodge or the Community Center, though he has no other specifics. After almost two days without sleep, Bivens says, “I am a senior this year, so having more than one class period of mechanics next year won’t even effect me. I’m doing this because no one else would and to show people that I am capable of both good and bad.” The effort Bivens has put out for his cause is admirable but not much can be done because of the budget cuts. Right now Ashland High School only has so much money to go around.
